DataPlay Announces World's First CSS-Managed Recording DVD Burner
CSS-MR Ready Products Available for Consumers, OEMs, and Replicators
Longmont, CO (September 25, 2007) - DPHI, Inc. / DataPlay, a leader in advanced optical storage solutions, announced today the world's first DVD burner capable of writing Content Scramble System (CSS) encrypted content for playback on standard DVD players. This has been made possible by the recent amendment to the CSS specification, which now allows consumers and retailers to download digital video content and create protected DVD discs. To incorporate CSS recording capabilities into their burners, DataPlay is participating in the Qflix™ technology and lP licensing program administered by Sonic Solutions. For consumers, DataPlay has released an External USB 2.0 DVD Burner called MovieWriter™, which will allow them to legally and securely download and burn movies to DVD at home. An I/T version of the MovieWriter™ will be available shortly for PC-OEMs to integrate into PC systems and home multi-media centers. In addition, DataPlay is making available a specialized CSS-MR/Qflix Pre-Key Writing System™ for media manufacturers and replicators.
"We are pleased to be partnering with Sonic Solutions to bring DVD download solutions to market. Being able to download a DVD movie to the PC and then burn that content to a DVD for playback on a home entertainment system offers consumers the convenience and flexibility they want," said Bill Almon Jr., President and CEO of DPHI, Inc. / DataPlay.
"We are delighted that the stage has been set so that innovative companies such as DataPlay can license Qflix-branded products to market to provide consumers a legal and convenient way to access a much broader range of entertainment than ever before," said Jim Taylor, senior vice president and general manager of Sonic Solutions' Advanced Technology Group.
In addition to technology and IP licensing, the Qflix program includes product and component certification to enable content owners, service providers, and manufacturers of recordable media, PC DVD writers, network-connected DVD recorders, set-top boxes, and software to create reliable, compatible, and interoperable DVD-on-Demand solutions. The program involves a broad set of services that includes detailed technical information as well as certification testing to enable media and drive manufacturers to create optical discs and drives for recording CSS-encrypted video and help ensure the best possible consumer experience.
DataPlay announced the availability of several CSS-MR capable products that will facilitate the electronic sell through and on-demand recording of movies and video programs to DVD. The new products, which include an external USB 2.0 DVD burner, an internal DVD burner, and a CSS-MR Pre-Key Writing System™ enable secure electronic delivery and burning of video encrypted with CSS (the industry-standard Content Scramble System) to recordable DVD media.
