Qflix

Qflix Technical Description

Qflix is a technology specification, and brand licensing and certification program that for the first time enables movies to be legally burned onto DVD. Qflix works with the DVD industry's Content Scramble System (CSS) and other encryption systems that protect movies on DVD from being illegally duplicated.

The Qflix system is a secure infrastructure designed to enable the delivery of premium entertainment content from Hollywood, through secure channels, to a client device capable of creating a DVD disc playable in the vast majority of players on the market. The infrastructure of multiple partners, each qualified and collaborating to enable this new market for each other, is the essence of the power behind this solution.

The Qflix system enables the electronic sell-through of DVDs, opening a variety of fulfillment models. This provides more rapid release of new titles, a virtually unlimited shelf for back catalog titles, the distribution of obscure and specialized content, and in-store DVD burning. One of the key benefits of the Qflix system is compatibility of playback. This is due to the use of the industry's Content Scramble System (CSS) protection, the very same protection used in replicated DVDs.

The Qflix system provides a certified value chain, from the content all the way through to the consumer's playback system. The elements and participants of this system are:

  • Video programs such as feature films from major studios and independent producers, television programs, special interest programs, and much more
  • Secure, certified electronic distribution services via online service providers
  • Specially prepared Qflix certified DVD recordable media
  • Compliant certified DVD recorder drives
  • DVD recorder systems (CE player or Home PC) using certified drives and certified software components (chip/firmware solution)
  • Online authentication process
  • Resultant Qflix DVDs (CSS-Protected discs)
